Between March 29 and April 5, 2026, the city of Burgos will host one of its most important annual traditions. During Holy Week, the historic center fills with religious processions, centuries-old rituals, and sacred art that attract visitors from across Spain and beyond.

Recognized as a Festival of National Tourist Interest, Burgos’ Holy Week stands out for its quieter and more contemplative atmosphere compared with other Spanish celebrations. Processions move slowly through medieval streets and historic squares, creating a reflective mood that is closely tied to the city’s heritage.

Much of the celebration takes place around the Burgos Cathedral, one of Spain’s most remarkable Gothic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Several processions take place throughout the week. Among the most notable is the Cristo de las Gotas procession on Palm Sunday. On Holy Thursday, the Procession of the Encounter brings together the images of the Virgin and Christ in Plaza Rey San Fernando. The Holy Burial procession on Good Friday is considered one of the most solemn moments of the entire celebration.

Holy Week is also a chance to explore more of Burgos’ historic architecture. Churches such as Iglesia de San Gil, Iglesia de San Cosme y San Damián, Iglesia de San Nicolás de Bari and Iglesia de San Lorenzo are part of the traditional procession routes.

You can also explore other cultural highlights while in the city, including the Museum of Human Evolution, which presents the scientific discoveries from the nearby Sierra de Atapuerca, one of Europe’s most important archaeological sites.
