Valentine’s Day in Portugal

Portugal on Valentine’s Day is far more than just a romantic getaway. Traveling here as a couple feels relaxed and simple. Imagine indulging in the winter sun on a terrace, with the distinct taste of a freshly baked pastel de nata lingering on your mouth. Whether you live in Portugal and want a change of pace or you’re visiting from abroad for something different, February is definitely a great time to explore.

With fewer crowds, you have more space to enjoy each place. You don’t need to travel far to feel like you’ve escaped. Sometimes, just one night in a small town or a peaceful setting is enough to break your routine.

This isn’t a typical tourist guide or a list of must-see places. Instead, it’s a set of ideas for couples traveling in Portugal, focused on taking your time, being present, and enjoying each other’s company.

Nature escapes for couples looking for silence

Nature escapes in Portugal for couples looking for silence in Valentine's Day.

Portugal has many places where life moves slowly. These spots are perfect for couples who want to unplug, spend more time talking, and simply relax.

In the Alentejo region, towns like Monsaraz, Marvão, and the Serra de São Mamede are great for a couple’s getaway. The scenery is wide open, time seems to pass slowly, and places to stay are often cozy and welcoming. It’s a good choice for locals and first-time visitors who want to see a quieter side of Portugal.

Even though it’s the high season, the Serra da Estrela doesn’t feel crowded. In February, you can hope for snow, enjoy nights beside a cozy fire, and mornings are perfect for taking it slow, savoring the beautiful landscape instead of rushing to see sights.

Near the coast, places like Carrapateira, Odeceixe, and Aljezur along the Costa Vicentina are also peaceful in February. If you’re visiting from abroad, it’s easy to pair this coastline with a trip to Lisbon for a nice mix of countryside and sea.

In the Douro, the vineyards are quiet in winter, making the region feel more intimate. You can drive along quiet roads, find empty viewpoints, and enjoy long meals in local restaurants, perfect for a couple’s trip.

Cities to experience at a slower pace

Traveling as a couple in Portugal doesn’t mean you have to skip the cities. It just means exploring them at a slower pace.

Coimbra is a great example. You can stroll by the river, browse old bookshops, and relax in a café without worrying about the time. These small things provide a sense of secret adventure. If you’re coming from abroad, be sure that Coimbra offers a nice alternative to larger European cities.

Braga can also surprise you if you look past the main sights. Its small restaurants, quiet neighborhoods, and laid-back vibe make it a good base for couples exploring northern Portugal.

In the Alentejo, Évora feels different at this time of year. Evenings are slower, dinners stretch out, and mornings dawn softly.

Lisbon and Porto can also be great for Valentine’s Day if you avoid the touristy areas. Stay in less obvious neighborhoods, explore on foot, and let yourself wander. It makes all the difference.

Surfing as a couple

A couple’s trip in Portugal can also be about surfing, even if you’re not chasing perfect waves. Free from pressure, surfing becomes more about living the moment and spending time together than about performance.

Portugal is a great place for this kind of trip. The beaches are easy to reach, surf schools welcome all levels, and you can mix surfing with long walks, seaside cafés, and relaxed afternoons.

Ericeira is perfect for couples with different interests. One person can surf while the other walks along the cliffs, reads, or enjoys a hot chocolate at a beach café. In the off-season, the town feels slower and more intimate, just right for a couple’s getaway.

On the west coast of the Algarve, beaches like Arrifana and Praia do Amado are great for mixing surfing with nature and quiet. Even in winter, you’ll find sunny days, nearly empty beaches, and a real sense of open space.

If you’re visiting from abroad, adding a few days of surfing is an easy way to see a different side of Portugal. For locals, it’s often the perfect reason to break routine and spend more time by the sea.

Micro trips that turn an ordinary day into something special

You don’t have to travel far to make Valentine’s Day special. When was the last time a 30-minute train ride felt transformative? Even a short train ride to another city can feel like an adventure. A visit to a spa or thermal baths can be a fun surprise. Taking a guided tour for two, or trying a food, cultural, or nature experience, lets you discover Portugal and grow closer together.

Remember: often, it’s the simplest trips that you remember most.

A note from Marlene

Portugal has been devastated by consecutive storms since the end of January.
