[2026 Updated] TRAVEL WITH SURFBOARDS? HERE’S WHAT AIRLINES CHARGE
Every year, it’s the same story. Airlines shuffle their baggage policies and adjust fees for sporting equipment, which becomes a real nightmare if you’re traveling with surfboards.
Since I started traveling, this has always been a deciding factor in choosing an airline. The truth is that in recent years my go-to choice has been Emirates for exactly this reason: surfboard transport and weight are included in the baggage allowance per passenger.
Of course, Emirates doesn’t fly everywhere. Depending on where you want to go, it’s essential to know the rates and rules of different airlines. And things shifted significantly in 2025/2026, especially with Hawaiian Airlines making a surprising move toward the surf community.

AIRLINES AND SURFBOARDS: COMPLETE 2026 GUIDE

TIPS FOR NEGOTIATING AT CHECK-IN
The check-in experience can make all the difference. Here are practical tips I’ve tested:
1. Arrive Early
Show up 3 hours before international flights. The agent has less pressure, is calmer, and is less likely to apply extra fees due to time constraints.
2. Be Honest and Direct
Say immediately: “I have a bag with surfboards. What exactly is the airline’s policy?” Many agents won’t confirm unless you ask directly.
3. Show the Written Policy
Bring the airline’s baggage page printed or on your phone. If there are discrepancies, show them. Often the agent’s information isn’t updated.
4. Speak in a Professional Tone
Don’t present yourself as an adventurous tourist. Be respectful and professional. Agents tend to be more flexible with people treating it as a business matter.
5. Pack Well. It Makes a Difference
If your bag is well-packed with visible protection, the agent sees you take it seriously, and there’s less likelihood of questioning the bag’s integrity.
6. Know Your Exact Measurements
Carry the dimensions (length, width, height) and weight of your bag. If it’s within limits, that’s a solid argument. Most agents measure visually, but having proof helps.
7. Ask About the Agent’s Experience
“How many surfboard bags have you checked in today?” A genuine conversation humanizes the situation and builds empathy.
8. If There’s a Refusal
Ask to speak with a supervisor. Sometimes the agent is wrong or the policy is ambiguous. A second escalation can resolve it.
9. Document Everything
If you pay a fee, keep the receipt. If you arrange something verbally, note the time, date, and agent’s name. Useful for filing complaints later.
10. Recording (Carefully)
If there’s a dispute, recording audio of the conversation (privately, after, not during) can protect you if you need to complain to the airline.
FINAL ADVICE
The golden rule: Confirm with the airline 48 hours before departure. Policies change, fees change, and what was free yesterday might have a charge today.
Save Money:
- Fly with surf-friendly airlines (Emirates, Hawaiian, Etihad)
- Wrap your board well—fewer complaints = fewer fees
- Reserve equipment when you buy your ticket, not at check-in
- If you have frequent flyer status, use it. Many codes address these situations
The truth: The check-in experience is just as important as the written policy. An agent having a good day can save you $100. An irritated agent can charge you the maximum. Be kind, be clear, come prepared.

This post was a great read! These tips are so important to know, Marlene!
Hi, Agness! Thank you so much for your comment. I’m glad this post is useful. But I advice to always check with the airline company you’re going to use since they are always changing baggage policy. 🙂
