Airalo review: Everything you need to know about the best eSIM for traveling

Airalo review

Let’s not kid ourselves. When we set off on any trip, one of the things we worry about is connectivity. How am I going to access the internet? Use Google Maps? Make WhatsApp calls? Post on social media?

Always being connected has become a mandatory requirement that no one wants to give up.

Until recently, as soon as I landed at a destination, the first thing I did was buy a SIM card, but that didn’t always work out, as I’ll tell you later in this article. Then I met Airalo’s eSIM!

At first, I approached this type of service with a healthy dose of skepticism, but after using it, I discovered that this is the best (and easiest) way to stay connected as soon as I arrive at a new destination.

But let’s go in parts. In this Airalo review, we’ll dive into the ins and outs of this eSIM, how it works, its benefits, and how it performs against the competition. Let’s get to it!

What is the Airalo eSIM?

Unlike the usual SIM cards, Airalo works digitally, eliminating the need for physical exchanges and activation processes that can sometimes be complicated.

Compatible with most smartphones, Airalo’s eSIM offers global coverage in over 200 countries, guaranteeing connectivity wherever you go.

How does Airalo work?

Airalo’s eSIM works on the principle of embedded SIM technology, simplifying the process of accessing mobile networks.

Unlike traditional SIM cards that require physical insertion into a device, this eSIM is digitally transferred to the smartphone and is ready to use.

Here’s how it works:

  • Choose your plan: Start by reviewing the Airalo website or app to select a data plan that suits your travel needs, considering the destination you’re going to and the length of your stay.
  • Buy and download: After selecting your chosen plan, purchase it via the Airalo platform. After completing the transaction, you’ll receive a confirmation email containing instructions for activating the eSIM according to your operating system.
  • Activate your eSIM: Open the email and follow the instructions to activate your profile. You can install the Airalo eSIM on iOS or Android devices. But beware, before purchasing the eSIM, confirm that your device is compatible with this type of digital card.
  • Connect and enjoy: Once the eSIM is installed, your device will connect to the chosen network. You can switch between data plans and manage your connection if you’re on a multi-destination trip. Please note that your new eSIM has a validity (e.g., 30 days) that starts as soon as it is connected to the chosen network.
How Airalo works

  • Flexibility: One of the main advantages of Airalo’s eSIM is its flexibility. Users can choose from various plans and data packages, providing flexible solutions to suit their itinerary.
  • Convenience: Gone are the days when you had to fiddle with physical SIM cards or visit local operator stores to activate roaming services. With Airalo’s eSIM, the whole configuration process is simple.
  • Security: Airalo guarantees encrypted connections and strives for stable network performance wherever you go. The idea is to keep your data safe so you can browse, stream, and communicate with peace of mind, even in unfamiliar environments. Airalo review: My experience with an eSIM

I always buy a SIM card when I travel, not only to access Google Maps but also to use WhatsApp when I’m in a place without Wi-Fi. So, going to an operator’s counter at the airport or a store as soon as possible was a priority.

However, on my trip to El Salvador, I realized it can be challenging to get hold of a SIM card when needed.

We arrived at the airport late at night, and contrary to what I had expected, there were no SIM stores. At the rent-a-car, they told us that at that time of night, they were only available at gas stations.

It turned out that, in a new country (which even had a reputation for not being 100% safe), at night, without any directions (I didn’t have Waze, Google Maps, or’s map wasn’t working), and on the road in terrible condition, it was tough to find our way.

We got to a service station, and the lady sold us a SIM. However, as it was after 7 p.m., she couldn’t activate it, and we would have to do it the next day.

Needless to say, it took us over an hour and a half to find our surf camp!

After this happened to me in El Salvador, I didn’t want to take any chances on my next trip, so I started researching eSIMs. That’s when I discovered Airalo.

For my surf trip to the Maldives, I bought the eSIM through them, and it worked wonders!

Once activated, I could access the local network and use everything I wanted, from WhatsApp to social media. And let me tell you that the whole trip was spent on a boat, hopping between islands.

Airalo vs. Holafly

What about the competition? Honestly, I can only speak of my experience with Airalo, but I’ve always heard of Holafly. So, I researched the main differences between the two eSIM providers.

✔️ Global coverage: Airalo and Holafly offer extensive coverage in several countries worldwide. However, Airalo partners with network providers in over 200 countries, while Holafly covers 197 countries.

✔️ Prices and plans: Both providers offer competitive rates for their data plans. However, taking Morocco as an example, although Holafly provides unlimited data, its cheapest eSIM is €27, with a validity of just five days. With Airalo, on the other hand, the cheapest eSIM is only USD 8/1Giga, with a validity of seven days and the option to top up.

✔️ Flexibility: Airalo and Holafly can customize data plans based on travel preferences. However, Airalo offers a slight advantage in terms of flexibility, with the possibility of adding new packages directly in the app.

And that concludes my review of Airalo. I hope this article helps you when the time comes to choose an eSIM for your next trip.

Personally, I’ve found this card to be more accessible, convenient, and hassle-free than traditional SIM cards.

It has become one of my essential travel items for all the reasons I’ve mentioned here.
