For those who think that making a surftrip is as easy as picking up the board and hit the road… you’re wrong! There’s much to take into account when we’re making our travel bag.
The surfboard is the first item to enter the list (of course!) and we need to take into consideration the destination where we’re going. As I’m from Ericeira, Portugal, where the water normally varies between 15º and 18º Celsius, the type of wax has its own features and don’t work in warmer waters.

So, if the destination is tropical, it’s better to remove the wax you have on the board, traveling with it clean and ready for new wax, suitable for hot water (I took three bars) when you get there.
In the case of this trip – I went to Sri Lanka 😉 – there was no need to carry a wetsuit, so a lycra was enough. Also, I took some surf booties, so I wouldn’t worry about rock or reef bottoms.

Sunscreens SeventyOne and Zynka.
Other items won the trip ticket: snorkeling equipment, transportation tapes, mosquito net and sunscreens.
A surfboard always requires some care
On long trips it’s natural that the surfboard suffers some dings. Since we never know if we’ll have some place to get it fix, nothing like being prepared. Thus, a basic kit with sandpaper, a piece of canvas, some epoxy and resin tubes (depending on the material which the board is made of) are enough to fill any holes. At least until you’re back home.

In the list of objects to take in the trip, we can’t forget the fins for the board, leashes (it’s always good to take more than one) and, of course, a beach towel, which often ends up serving as a bath towel.

Indeed, the more soft elements (eg.: clothes) that you can take with the board, the better, so as to cushion any impacts caused during transportation.
